In this article, we’ll be talking about installing Discipline 3 – keep a compelling scoreboard. Discipline 3 is the discipline of engagement. The concept is that teams don’t play at their best until they’re emotionally engaged. Emotional engagement happens when a team can clearly see when and where they are winning and losing. In short, people play differently when they’re keeping score. The purpose of a scoreboard is to motivate the players to win. How do you design a scoreboard that engages the team and makes them want to win?

First, you must choose a theme that displays clearly and instantly the measures you are tracking. The most useful scoreboards for displaying lag measures, trend lines easily communicate from x to y by when. Our scoreboard measures where we are versus the WIG – and where we should be now. We also measure X against last quarter-to-date and last month-to date. The engagement we’re hoping for is to always be ahead of last month and last quarter. At the same time, we always stay on pace for the WIG. The Screen Printing San Diego community is vast, but our differentiator is “The 4 Disciplines of Execution.”

It is ideal when the scoreboard is personalized. The more your team feels like it’s their scoreboard, the more they take ownership of the results. Achieving the WIG becomes a matter of pride. Remember: simplicity is the key to keeping the team engaged. Your scoreboard should communicate at a glance. It must be so simple that the team can see in less than 5 seconds where they are winning – and where they need to adjust. The scoreboard must include both actual results and target results. The scoreboard should be posted everywhere. The scoreboard should always be first and foremost on everyone’s mind all the time.
