In Discipline 1, we set a WIG target. In Discipline 2, we defined critical lead measures. In Discipline 3, we designed a scoreboard. Today we will discuss Discipline 4: Create a Cadence of Accountability. McChesney and Covey state that “without consistent accountability the team will never give their best effort to the game.” Discipline 4 begins a regular cycle of communication with your team. This communication brings transparency and clarity. This clarity creates a culture of accountability.
The Accountability Discipline begins and ends with strict adherence of daily tracking by everyone on the team on the scoreboard. With that in place, the team holds a weekly WIG session. This session is a 30-60-minute meeting held at the exact same time and day every week. In these sessions, each member of the team makes personal commitments to drive the lead measures. Each team member first Accounts for last week’s commitments. Then, he/she Reviews the scoreboard. Finally, he/she Plans the coming week’s commitments. Every team member follows the exact same Cadence of Accountability. This is the rhythm that makes us a Screen Printing San Diego leader.
With that in place, everyone gets busy on their lead measures and commitments. Yet, inevitably, the “whirlwind” takes over. The “whirlwind” is those dozens of activities that must get completed, but not necessarily the “highest value tasks” that drive lead measures. To combat this, the team holds a “huddle” daily. A “huddle” is a 5-10-minute daily meeting at the beginning of each day. These huddles help tackle the short-term challenges that affect the WIG and lead measures. Each team member accounts for how their daily activities drives a lead measure that moves the score closer to the WIG.
